Research

The more research that has been done on the subjects of space and space exploration, the more we realise the importance it has on our economy, our planet and the way we live our lives. Governments across the world have backed this up by pledging more investment on space research and using this research to improve the lives of everyone on our planet.

Ireland also recognises the potential of space and has increased national funding to support the development of space related capabilities and the growth of a thriving space related enterprise sector.

Since Ireland joined the European Space Agency in 1975, Irish industry and research groups have been at the heart of Europe’s space missions. In June 2019, Ireland launched its first ever space strategy. The National Space Strategy runs until 2025 and aims to increase awareness of Ireland’s involvement in space.

Ireland has a long established history of astronomy and space research. The country has developed a thriving space industry and research community in recent years, this is thanks in many ways to the country’s membership in the European Space Agency (ESA). Space Agencies

The European Space Agency is an international organisation with 18 member states; Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. By coordinating the financial and intellectual resources of its members, it can undertake programmes and activities far beyond the scope of any single European country.
